Tagalog Classes Part 2

Dear friends and family, This week was more or less the same as last week. I could notice by the end of the week that my teachers were using more and more Tagalog when explaining instructions to us (they use some English here and there), and we're expected to use it a bit more than we have, but we're still mainly expected to just use what we know and speak Taglish to the best of our abilities. In my classes, we've continued to memorize phrases for each principle taught in the first lesson, and we've been practicing teaching each individual principle.  So far, I think my smoothest and most clear subject I've practiced teaching in class has been talking about the Book of Mormon, so I hope I can continue to have that confidence and composure when it comes to that topic at least.  We've also been doing more roleplay scenarios in Tagalog to practice meeting people on the street or getting to know them or resolving their concerns. Sometimes I feel a bit awkward as I...

Tagalog Classes Part 1

Mahal kong pamilya at mga kaibigan, This week was the first week in which my classes were completely (mostly) in Tagalog. It wasn't as bad as I was expecting (though our classes are a bit more quiet haha), but it was still interesting. For example, whenever I try to translate something I want to say in my head, any leftover English that I don't know how to say Tagalog immediately is translated into Spanish because I've been in the English-to-Spanish mindset for so long. Sometimes, I even have to stop myself from talking in Spanish to my Tagalog class haha *facepalm*. It's all going well though, and my teachers and tutor say that my Tagalog is coming along nicely. My classes were slightly different this week. Instead of studying the doctrine that we teach and how to better our teaching skills, we've also focused on learning grammatical concepts in Tagalog, how to better develop the gift of tongues, and practicing teaching different principles in Tagalog to the best...

Home MTC Week 2

Dear subscribers, Well, I survived the second week of the MTC....I need to think of another way to open these emails. Anyway, this week has been pretty good. In my classes, we mainly studied Lessons 1-3 (The Restoration, The Plan of Salvation, The Gospel of Jesus Christ), and we did more teaching practices. This week was the last week before my classes are completely in Tagalog, so next week should be interesting haha. On Monday, my companionship taught one of my teachers about doing temple/family history work in order to be a missionary for the dead, and he said it genuinely answered some of his prayers about how he can be a better missionary outside of serving a mission, so that was pretty neat. On Tuesday, I was able to hang out with my best friend that evening for a little bit. I went to his farewell earlier that week, so we just hung out as Elders. I also had a district meeting before that, and we were guessing each other's heights; it turns out that I'm tied for sho...

MTC Week 1

Image
To my adoring fans, Well, I survived the first week of the MTC, so that's exciting. It sort of feels like school except that I actually have a good sleep schedule. On Monday, I woke up and had a large group meeting from 8 to 9 with all of the incoming missionaries (I think there's over 400 of us), and we just talked about our purpose, gave us an overview of our missionary experience, and got us excited for the work. We had one of these meetings each morning for this first week. My first district class is from 9 to 12, and my second class is from 1:30 to 4:30. There are 4 other Elders in my district, and we were all assigned to different areas of the Philippines. It was during this time when I also met my companions: Elder McClellan and Elder Blauer  (with an odd number in our district, my companionship is a trio). They seem like pretty cool guys, and it seems to be going well with us so far. I don't have much to say about the classes; they mainly helped us to get to know ...
